Whole Body Vibration Shown To Have Positive Effect on Diabetes

June 1, 2017

A recent study at Augusta University published in the current issue of The Journal of Endocrinology shows some very promising results for using whole body vibration to treat diabetes.  Many people find it challenging to exercise regularly and that is contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemics. These disorders can increase the risk of bone fractures and physical activity can help to decrease this risk and reduce the negative metabolic effects of each condition.  Whole body vibration provides a convenient, effective and simple way to get the daily exercise our bodies need.

“Our study is the first to show that whole-body vibration may be just as effective as exercise at combating some of the negative consequences of obesity and diabetes,” said the study’s first author, Meghan E. McGee-Lawrence, Ph.D., of Augusta University in Augusta, Ga.

“These results are encouraging,” McGee-Lawrence said. “However, because our study was conducted in mice, this idea needs to be rigorously tested in humans to see if the results would be applicable to people.”

If you aren’t familiar with the term endocrinology it is the study of the endocrine system in the human body, a system of glands which secrete hormones. Endocrinologists are at the core of solving the most pressing health problems of our time, from diabetes and obesity to infertility, bone health, and hormone-related cancers.  Their research is making a difference in lives around the world.

I could not be more encouraged that this group of scientists , doctors and researchers is committed to truly studying the effects of whole body vibration in human physiology and I am looking forward to their results!

The study, “Whole-body Vibration Mimics the Metabolic Effects of Exercise in Male Leptin Receptor Deficient Mice,” will be published online at https://academic.oup.com/endo/article-lookup/doi/10.1210/en.2016-1250 ahead of print.
